Skating
is versatile with its many different forms. An inline
skater can choose to be a hockey player, artistic skater,
street skater, speed skater, or recreational/fitness skater.
Skating is accessible. It does not require
a team, a ballpark, or a bunch of special equipment. All it
requires is a pair of skates, safety equipment, and a hard
surface. Most of us can literally skate right out our front
door.
Skating is inexpensive. A good pair of skates
and safety equipment can be had for under $200. For that price
you get several years of fun!
Skating is good aerobic exercise. According
to one study, inline skaters expend 570 calories per hour,
equivalent to bicyclists.
Skating is low impact. Another study showed
that skating causes half the impact on joints as does running.
Skating is safe. In the 90's, a comparison
of injury rates in various sports showed that inline skating
ranked number 11 out of 12 sports, with lower injury rates
than common activities such as baseball, basketball, bicycling,
soccer, swimming, and volleyball.
Skating is fun. This is the icing on the cake that
makes skating seem more like a hobby than a workout.Just go
to East Coast Park on a wekkend afternoon and you will see
what its all about.

When
selecting skates, you have many things to consider: brand,
model, wheel size, bearing quality, etc. As a new skater,
how do you make a decision?
First, go to a quality Skate PRO shop. SkateSports
has two locations - at East Coast and another at Kallang and
with 12 years experience fitting and teaching inline skating
youy can trust the crew to help you understand more about
the sport and what products will be better suited for you.
You should consider both price (skates in the range
of $149-299 should be appropriate) and wheel size
(smaller 78-80 millimeter wheels are best for beginner skaters).
Our top suggestion for beginners would be a BlackHawk or any
other skate with a sturdy other shell and soft boot for comfort.
Comfort is the key in purchasing new skates
and you will find that some skates just fit better than others.
Its not about the brand so much as it is about the comfort,
price and overall style of the skate to suit your needs. Simply
put, purchase the skate the fits you best. SkateSports
crew will give you a custom fitting. This means they will
evaluate your physical attributes and discuss your budget
then select a few skates that will best suit your overall
needs. Then you will get to try on the skates and decide on
the best possible comfort - consider value for money then
buy !
Is it okay to purchase skates online? The
obvious disadvantage is that you cannot test the skates for
comfort in addition if the fit or the quality were to give
you any problems the waranty will not be honored by local
skate shops. The best idea is to buy from SkateSports were
you can always try before you buy and there is a 12 month
warranty on the goods.
You will also need to purchase protective equipment.
Starting with your head, any approved bicycle helmet will
work fine. You also need knee pads, wrist guards, and elbow
pads. While you might feel overly armored, it is this protective
gear and your wise decision to start skating and join any
classes and actvities at SkateSports and reduce your chances
of injury.
